Revisiting TheGoodLife

by Harlan, September 12, 2014

Photography in dark places is challenging — if you want the subject to be visible. Bars are likely the worst locations for good photography, but over the course of two years or so I made several attempts to capture some adequate images of TheGoodLife, a cover band specializing in the latest and classic hip-hop and pop music.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been to one of their shows. They are still playing around the bars of New Jersey, entertaining the drunk, nearly drunk, and really drunk with the latest music from the radio. Over the years I was photographing them — during which I attended maybe five shows with my camera — the band’s line-up changed several times.

The venues represented by these photographs are City Streets in East Windsor, New Jersey and The Downtown in Red Bank, New Jersey. These have been frequent spots for TheGoodLife’s performances, although they may no longer perform at City Streets.

With flashing stage lights and a dark space, the photography was difficult, but the end result looks to me like stills from old concert film footage.

For a little taste of how a TheGoodLife performance might have sounded from 2010 to 2012, use Spotify to play the songs listed above. This playlist is taken from the band’s various set-lists.
